Effects of Controls – Rear Aerofoil Controls

Flaps
Simple Flaps
Applying flaps increases aerofoil camber

Simple flaps do change aerofoil camber, but does not change Wing Area.

Therefore:

  • Increased Lift
  • Increased Drag
Split Flaps

Split flaps do not change to upper surface Camber, but do increase to Lower Surface Camber. Similar to simple flaps, there is no change to Wing Area.

Therefore:

  • Increase in Lift
  • Big Increase in Drag
Slotted Flaps

Slotted flaps increase Camber, but does not change to Wing Area. They provide a better increase in Lift due Slot.

Therefore:

  • Increase in Lift
  • Increase in Drag (but less drag than split flaps)
Fowler Flaps

Fowler flaps increase Camber, and DO increase Wing Area. The increase in wing area is due to the extension of the Chord length.

Therefore:

  • Better Increase in Lift due Slot
  • Increase in Lift due Increased Wing Area
  • Increase in Drag (but less drag than split flaps)
